Momentum Press Release

“Edelman’s workplace side of the business got a boost last month with the launch of Momentum, a holistic financial wellness platform that includes coaching and planning resources for retirement plan participants.”

— Investment News, July 2022

Data-Driven Design

Our goal was to ensure that Momentum’s content was readily accessible, tailored to highly personalized needs, and compelling enough to encourage repeat visits to the platform.

I developed the information architecture by analyzing qualitative insights gathered from a nationwide survey, which involved thousands of employees utilizing Edelman Financial Engines' existing 401(k) services. The outcome was a tabbed navigation design comprising three static categories—Work, Personal Life, and Retirement—and one personalized tab.

Leveraging employer data ensures that the personalized tab remains highly relevant to each employee. For the MVP, we identified milestones such as onboarding, family changes, promotions, and equity grants with hopes to expand after launch.

XFN Collaboration

Inviting cross-functional stakeholders early in the design process significantly contributed to Momentum’s success. Alongside our Agile team of four (myself, two engineers, and a product manager), I regularly engaged Marketing, Legal & Risk, Sales, and Copywriting in our weekly design sessions.

This early involvement fostered diverse perspectives, aligned goals, facilitated quick design iterations, and bolstered buy-in. It also highlighted gaps in customer touchpoints, such as marketing emails and microsites. Rather than considering these deliverables beyond our scope, I collaborated closely with the marketing team to provide imagery, language, FAQs, and other assets that aligned with our UX principles and goals.

Ultimately, this collaborative approach became integral to our Agile framework, contributing to Momentum’s successful launch, with each team rightfully claiming ownership of the final product's success.

User Testing Results

Employee feedback and participation was crucial for the final deliverables. After several user testing and design iteration sessions, we had high confidence that the final product delivered on usability, discoverability and retention.

  • 92% reported they could quickly explore and find relevant content

  • 87% found the personalized features highly relevant to their financial concerns

  • 80% expressed they would use Momentum again
